spring-cleaning

Spring has sprung and it is time to deep clean your home and clear out the cobwebs. The spring cleaning tradition comes from the days when homes were heated by fireplaces and there were many efforts made to keep warmth in by any means possible. This meant that houses were basically closed up for several months. Once spring arrived, it was warm enough to open up homes. Days grew longer, and people were more active and productive.  Since then, spring cleaning has become the standard practice. Here are 10 spring cleaning tips and tricks to get your space feeling fresh and clean.

10. Deep Clean the Fridge and Freezer

Refrigerator

Empty out the fridge, completely check all expiration dates, and throw out anything past it’s prime or that you’re not going to use again. Next, give all shelves and drawers a good scrub down with soap and water. Wipe down the interior and organize your fridge items by frequency of use.

9. Wash All Bedding

Bedroom

In addition to washing your sheets every couple weeks, it is best to use your spring cleaning momentum to wash it all! Throw your comforter, blankets, and pillows in the washing machine and get those fresh and clean too.

8. Scrub Down Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen

Over time, grease and grime builds up on the outside of cabinets due to them being opened and closed frequently. Be sure to use a disinfecting, but non-abrasive, cleaner and a little effort to rid them of all those grimy germs.

7. Freshen Your Washing Machine

Washer and Dryer

There are many products you can purchase to clean your washing machine. Additionally, some of the newer models even tell you when it is time to clean the washing drum. However, using distilled white vinegar and baking soda and running the washer with hot water can produce the same sparkling effects.

6. Clean Your Oven

Cleaning your oven can be done by running the self-clean cycle for burnt on messes. However, using baking soda and distilled white vinegar, along with a little elbow grease can defeat even the toughest stains. Don’t forget to degrease the range and wipe down the outside too!

5. Eliminate Tile Stains

Using a combination of degreasing dish detergent, white vinegar, and water, you can banish stains and grime build-up from tile. This mixture can be used for showers, tubs, and even the kitchen. Mix ingredients in a spray bottle, spray on tile, let sit, give it a good scrub and rinse. You’ll be amazed by the sparkle of your tile.

4. Dust the Walls

Dust collects on walls and baseboards just like any other surface, therefore, it is important to use a duster or microfiber cloth to give your walls a much needed wipe down. You can also use a melamine sponge for stains and scuffs.

2. Clean Windows

In order to let all that gorgeous spring sunshine into your house, make sure your windows are sparkly and clear. Use newspaper and glass cleaner to remove grime and dust build-up. Newspaper is effective because it does not leave lint behind that some paper towel products can. This tip is quite simple, however, some newer style windows cannot take chemical cleaners, so make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent damage.

1. Air It Out
