12 Surprising Costco Foods You Should Avoid

5 min read

If you’re counting calories or are just concerned about your overall health, you’ll want to avoid the following food items at Costco. Some of the items on this list may surprise you!

12. Bananas

Believe it or not, bananas are one of the worst foods you can buy from Costco. But, wait a minute. Bananas are healthy, right? Right!

So, what’s the problem, then? Well, according to Dr. Amy Lee, Head of Nutrition for Nucific, it isn’t the bananas that are the problem. It’s their size.

“If you actually compare one of these bananas to a normal-sized banana that you would find in a regular supermarket, you will realize it’s almost twice as big,” Lee told Eat This, Not That! And, of course, if it’s twice as big, it has twice as many calories.

11. Protein Bars

Protein bars are often touted as healthy snacks that aid in weight loss efforts. I mean, it makes sense, after all. Protein is essential for building lean muscle and shedding those unwanted pounds. And, while these bars are packed with protein, most at Costco are also packed with sugar.

What’s worse is that some of them don’t even have much protein. Instead, they consist primarily of sugars and oils, with a little bit of protein. Scary, isn’t it? That’s why it pays to read the label before devouring any protein bar carefully.

10. Açai Bowls

In 2018, Costco decided to switch out some of its food court’s unhealthy items for healthier options. Enter the açai bowl — a frozen, dessert-like treat filled with berries, granola and banana chips. Sounds healthy, right? Yes, it sounds healthy, but is it actually good for you? Well, according to an article published by Business Insider, the açai bowl is the worst item on Costco’s food court menu.

“There’s nothing worse than an unhealthy food masquerading as a healthy one,” the article reads. “It has 30 grams of sugar, which equals over seven teaspoons. For reference, the American Heart Association recommends that men consume no more than nine teaspoons of sugar a day and that women consume no more than six.”
