Tourists are known for being jerks sometimes. So, without further ado, here are ten ridiculous things tourists have done while on vacation.
1. Complaining About Trivial Things
If you’ve ever worked in customer service, you’ve probably heard your fair share of complaints. And, many of them were quite ridiculous, too, weren’t they? Yep, just like this complaint from a tourist:
According to The Guardian, a survey of travel agents revealed that a tourist once complained about curry food in India. “On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food at all,” the tourist said. Perhaps he or she didn’t get the memo that curry food is thought to have originated in India, so it stands to reason that most restaurants would serve such dishes.
2. Groping Disney Characters
According to an article published by MSN, Orlando-based NBC affiliate WESH reported in 2009 that a 60-year-old man groped Minnie Mouse while vacationing at Disney World. The man was said to have grabbed her breasts and buttocks. The woman who was wearing the costume told WESH that she could not report the incident right away because she had to stay in character. But, as soon as she had the opportunity to report it, she did.
So, what happened to the groper? He was sentenced to supervised probation and 50 hours of community service.
3. Filming X-Rated Movies
No, you’re not seeing things. That’s exactly what we said because that’s exactly what happened at the pyramids in Egypt. According to the Daily Mail, a porn star “allegedly flashed parts of her body repeatedly while on a coach trip to the tourist destination.” And, she continued to do so even with other tourists in the background! Then, she had to nerve to complain about the views. “This f sucks. What is there to look at? It really sucks, even our resorts are better,” she said.
4. Hanging Their Unmentionables Out to Dry in Public
According to an article published by the Daily Mail, a Chinese tourist decided it was totally okay to hang her underwear out to dry at Chiang Mai Airport. The article says she draped black underwear, a pink bra, and a black and white printed dress across the seats in one of the departure lounges. She then proceeded to stretch out across six chairs and put her feet up.
Naturally, fellow travelers were outraged by her actions. Some of them took to social media to vent. “Doesn’t their country teach the concept of manners?” one traveler commented. “This is totally crazy!” another said. “What’s wrong with people?” a third traveler commented.
5. Stealing a Penguin
Two British tourists were visiting Australia when they got drunk, broke into the Sea World theme park near Surfers Paradise, set off a fire extinguisher in the shark tank, swam with dolphins, and stole a penguin. Then, they dumped the penguin in shark-infested waters. Don’t worry, they didn’t leave the bird there. They actually awakened the next morning to find the penguin in their room.
The pair told the court they couldn’t remember much about what happened that night. Nonetheless, the two were still fined $1,000 (£640) each. They were also reminded of how lucky they were that they hadn’t fallen into the shark tank or the polar bear enclosure.
6. Not Following the Rules
Not only is not following the rules a sign of disrespect, it actually can result in serious injury and even death. Like the group of tourists that ignored or were slow to heed a park official’s commands to leave a bridge in Yellowstone National Park because they were trying to snap pictures of some bears, who then began charging toward the tourists.
Or, the two young women who posed for a selfie next to a crocodile, despite the fact that the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory issued a direct warning against taking selfies with crocodiles.
Or, the Chinese tourists who decided it would be a neat idea to surround a pair of bull moose fighting at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. When the fight ended, the moose charged into the crowd, resulting in several of the tourists needing to be hospitalized.
7. Carving Their Initials into a Historical Building
Two American tourists were arrested after they were caught carving their initials into the Colosseum in Rome. According to the Daily Mail, the pair were able to carve a “J” and an “N” into a brick wall on the first floor of the building’s west side. Afterward, they posed together for a selfie.
The two, who both happened to be women in their 20s, were charged with aggravated damage on a building of historical and artistic interest. They issued the following statement: “We apologize for what we did. We regret it, but we did not imagine it was something so serious.” Really?!
8. Dumping Ashes into the Water
In 2007, the Los Angeles Times reported that a woman had been accused of dumping ashes into the water of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride at Disneyland, although the story was never officially confirmed. However, witnesses said the lady dumped into the water what appeared to be a baby powder-like substance that quickly dissipated. As a result, the ride was shut down immediately but later reopened after it was determined that the powder-like substance was not harmful to the other riders.
Just what those ashes were, no one will probably ever know. But, according to PEOPLE, there have been numerous reports of people dumping the ashes of their loved ones in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride and other Disney attractions. Perhaps this lady was doing the same thing.
9. Pulling Not-So-Funny Pranks
Some pranks just aren’t funny — especially when they can cause mass hysteria. Such as is the case with a 22-year-old man who, in 2018, caused a hotel to go on lock down after he thought it would be funny to tell people that there was an active shooter on the premises. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the man thought the prank would make for a good YouTube video. Unfortunately for him the police didn’t agree, and they arrested him and charged him with disorderly intoxication and disturbing the peace.
10. Holding People’s Luggage Hostage
After a couple’s Hello Kitty toothbrush got broken at a Disney resort, the two decided to take matters into their own hands and hold someone else’s luggage hostage. They didn’t intentionally go and take the luggage — the hotel actually sent the wrong luggage up to the couple’s room. Well, when hotel personnel showed up at the door to retrieve the luggage, the two started yelling and demanding the hotel replace their broken toothbrush immediately. When the hotel refused, the couple locked themselves in the room and held the luggage “hostage.”
The police were eventually called in. Authorities forced their way into the room, only to end up being attacked by the pair. They were charged with grand theft, battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting an officer without violence.
As for the toothbrush? Well, no one knows for sure how it got broken or if it even was the fault of the hotel.
