In case you hadn’t heard, Sears recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. According to an article by Bloomberg, the retail giant found itself billions of dollars in debt as it struggled to keep up with the rise of online shopping. As a result, Sears announced that it would be closing several stores. The company said in a press release on its website that it’s currently negotiating a financing deal with ESL Investments Inc. The deal will help ensure Sears stores stay open for holiday shopping.

What About Liquidation Sales?

According to USA Today, a court filing says the liquidation sales are set to begin in a couple of weeks. Sears stores will remain open for business this holiday season as we look forward to serving our customers, Sears chairman Eddie Lampert, of ESL Investments Inc., said in a statement, USA Today reported.

So, what kinds of deals can you expect? According to MSN, one location’s liquidation sale had clothing and shoes for half off the regular price and tools that were 10 to 20 percent off. Big-ticket items were 30 to 40 percent off.

How Consumers Will be Affected

Now that Sears has filed for bankruptcy, you may be wondering what’s going to happen to your appliance warranty, or your gift card, or perhaps even that appliance you’ve ordered. According to Consumer Reports, your warranty will still be honored–for now, anyway. That applies even if another company takes over Sears. “We are currently honoring our warranties, protection agreements, and guarantees as normal,” a Sears representative said in a Consumer Reports article.

If you have a Sears gift card, Consumer Reports recommends spending it–now. If you don’t, and the stores close, you’ll have to file a claim with a bankruptcy court. “The court will ultimately decide whether Sears will honor its gift cards, and if so, for how long,” Christina Tetreault, senior staff attorney at Consumers Union, the advocacy division of Consumer Reports, said in the article. “It could take years for cardholders to recover funds—if they get anything at all.”

As for your recently ordered appliance? Consumer Reports says there’s a pretty good chance you’ll still get it. We’re making every effort to ensure timely delivery for items that are currently being shipped, Sears said, according to the article. “I’d just be a bit wary of something that is back-ordered and not assured of delivery by the end of the year,” Henry Sommer, a lawyer and president of the National Consumer Bankruptcy Rights Center, said in the article.

Kmart Stores are Also Affected

NOTE: Kmart will also have liquidation sales that will begin in about a couple of weeks.

There are 687 Sears and Kmart stores remaining. However, if Sears Holding fails to restructure, more, or even all, of its stores could end up closing. Time will tell if we’ll get to have Sears around for another 126 years or if we have to bid farewell to one of our nation’s most iconic retailers.
