Action comedies featuring best buddies often make great movies. There is something hilarious about two buddies going through all kinds of trouble without losing their cool. There are plenty of movies that have this theme however, some are remarkably memorable.
Below are our top 10 picks for the best buddy action comedies ever made.
10. Men in Black
Will Smith (Agent J) and Tommy Lee Jones (Agent K) are definitely on our all-time favorite action movie buddies list, and for a good reason. The fact that the two characters are completely different from each other makes this duo extra hilarious. The charming character played by Will Smith and the grumpy, more serious of the two, Tommy Lee Jones, bring out the best in each other’s characters.
Add to that a great movie plot about a secret organization that monitors and organizes alien activities on earth and you’re in for a good laugh.
9. Rush Hour
After the daughter of a Chinese diplomat is kidnapped, chief inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) flies in from Hong Kong to take part in the ongoing investigation along with detective James Carter (Chris Tucker). Together, the duo – who initially hated each other – wreaks havoc, saves the diplomat’s daughter and become best buddies along the way.
As Lee and Carter have completely different backgrounds with nothing in common but hating each other and being cops, the movie’s story unfolds in a really funny and memorable way.
8. Bad Boys
Detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are here to take down Miami’s bad boys. After a large cache of confiscated drugs is stolen from police custody, the duo has 72 hours to get the drugs back and while protecting an important murder case witness.
Despite being best buddies, Lowrey and Burnett are completely different characters. While Burnett is the typical family guy, Lowrey is more of a ladies man. The remarkable acting of both Will Smith and Martin Lawrence make this one of the best action comedies and movie partnerships ever.
7. Lethal Weapon
Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is a veteran officer who hates working with a partner. To his luck, he gets partnered with the not-so-stable Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) to solve a big drug smuggling case. Despite the “bumpy start” the two learn how to stand each other –the hard way – and succeed in solving the case.
6. Shanghai Noon
In Shanghai Noon, Imperial Guard Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) travels to the Wild West to save a kidnapped Chinese princess. After crossing paths with the delusional smalltime robber Roy O’Bannon (Owen Wilson), the two find themselves stuck together on a journey in which each had their own different goals.
The unusual mix of Chinese Kung-Fu (thanks, Jackie Chan!) and the Wild West cowboys along with the hilarious accidental adventures of Wang and O’Bannon has all the makings of a good movie.
5. Starsky & Hutch
When action comedy buddies are mentioned, Starsky & Hutch are hands down two of the most memorable action movie partners of all time. In the 2004 remake of this movie, straight-arrow detective David Starsky (Ben Stiller) and the loose-cannon detective Ken Hutchinson (Owen Wilson) are paired together by their captain – who can’t stand either of them – to solve a mysterious murder case.
The gritty 70s theme along with the unusual partnership between Starsky and Hutch makes this one of the most memorable action/comedy buddy movies ever made.
4. Hollywood Homicide
Sgt. Joe Gavilan (Harrison Ford) and Det. K.C Caldan (Josh Harnett) are two partners in the Hollywood Homicide division who have a huge age gap and nothing in common except one thing: side jobs at which they suck at…big time!
Gavilan tries himself as a real estate agent, at which he fails miserably while Caldan tries to become an actor with results similar to that of Gavilan. When not failing at real estate selling and acting, the partners try to solve some Hollywood murder cases.
3. Hot Fuzz
This is the only British movie on our list and is definitely one of the best action comedies that we’ve ever seen. In Hot Fuzz, the legendary duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost return as British cops Nicholas Angel and Danny Butterman.
After being transferred from London to the small town of Sandford (for being such a good cop that he makes his colleagues look bad!), Angel is paired with Butterman – who is as slouchy as the name suggests – to solve a mysterious murder.
2. Dumb & Dumber
Despite not being strictly an “action comedy”, it is hard to talk about comedy buddy movies without bringing up Dumb and Dumber. A few minutes into this movie and you find yourself trying to answer the urgent question of who is dumb and who is dumber (their mind-blowing stupidity makes it really hard to decide).
In Dumb and Dumber, Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dune (Jeff Daniels) are two best friends with single digit IQs trying to survive together in Rhode Island, before they decide to go to Aspen to return a bag that they don’t know is filled with dangerous mobster’s money.
1. Ride Along
In Ride Along, Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) wants to marry James Payton’s (Ice Cube) sister. Payton’s sister told Ben that she’d love it if he’s got her brother’s approval before they actually get married.
To prove his worth to Payton, who is a top-cop in the Atlanta Police Department, Ben goes with him on a 1-day ride along, in which the two encounter many situations that they hilariously overcome. Despite being a man-child and the exact opposite of Payton’s tough character, Ben is driven by his ego to keep up, which makes this accidental partnership as hilarious as it could possibly get.
If you’re a comedy action movie lover, those movies are definitely a must-watch!
