Top 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds

Beagle

Well, this list is quite the delight. Who doesn’t love dogs!? Here is our list of the Top 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds.

10. Shih Tzu

Like an Asian Poodle, the Shih Tzu is a small, cute, and lovable “toy dog” type from China. It’s name in Chinese actually means something akin to “lion” even though it’s average weight is around 8 to 16 pounds for both male and female. Why “lion?”, we don’t know but if you let this fur ball grow out it’s hair, it looks more like an old stereotypical Kung-Fu master wouldn’t you say? The Shih Tzu has as average lifespan of 16 years.

9. Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer is another dog that’s as adorable as much as it is small. A cross between a Standard Schnauzer and smaller breeds, the minis average weight is from 12 to 20 pounds depending on if male or female. Their bushy walrus beard and eyebrows give them an almost human-like expression, so it’s not hard to see why they’re one of the most popular breeds of dogs.

8. Boxer

Boxers are a medium-sized, but very strong dog (just look the name!). With powerful jaw designed just to hunt larger prey, and the heart of a child, boxers make for great family guard dogs.

7. Beagle

Ever seen the 1997 movie “Shiloh”? To avoid spoilers, the titular dog of the movie is a Beagle. Beagles are a small scent hound breed with a distinctive brown, black, and white coat.

6. Dachshund

The Dachshund, aka the “wiener dog”, is a dog with a long body and short legs. It came from Germany and can live up to 17 years.

5. Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier or “Yorkie” is a small dog from England and is a good companion for quiet type of person. They will brighten up your day with their bold and confident barks and their independent manner. Is the Yorkshire Terrier the dog for you?

4. Chihuahua

Named after a state in Mexico, the Chihuahua (also originating from Mexico) is the smallest breed of dog in the world. The biggest thing that stands out about these tiny creatures are their large eyes and ears. They are small dogs with a fast and energetic personality, and a big heart to share.

3. Poodle

Poodles are those little, high-maintenance, furry heads that people either just adore or find annoying. It’s disputed as to whether the Poodle originated from Germany or France (although it’s probably a French thing). They have a very distinctive look, something reminiscent of a sheep crossed with a water dog.

2. German Shepherd

German Shepherds are from Germany(duh!) and were used to herd sheep, and that’s how it got its name as a German Shepherd. The color of their fur is usually black and light brown/tan. They are big and tough dogs that listen to their owner and are very loyal to people.

1. Labrador/Golden Retrievers

We placed the two Retrievers in the same spot on this list because of how similar they are. If your going to adopt a dog, this one is a good choice. Goldies are playful, loyal, kind, and confident, while Labradors are gentle and trusting. Most of them are similar in their temperament.

There you go, the top 10 most popular dog breeds! Remember that there are dogs with no homes everywhere, so please take time to think about adopting one of them.
