There are many things that make a superhero great. Whether it’s being bitten by a radioactive spider, getting exposed to gamma radiation, or having mutant powers, there is one thing that these plots have in common: they make great movies.

With awesome plots, powerful heroes, dangerous villains, and mind-blowing special effects, what’s not to like about superhero movies? The following the 10 superhero movies that deserved a spot on our all-time top 10 list.

10. The Dark Knight (2008)

This is hands down the best movie of the Dark Knight trilogy and one of the best superhero movies ever made. Asides from the dark theme and the amazing performance of Christian Bale which is common throughout the series, the late Heath Ledger made this movie extra special.

Heath Ledger’s performance in the Joker’s role was simply unforgettable and was the most remarkable Batman villain role ever. From his evil laugh to the weird facial expressions, Heath Ledger embedded this character as THE Joker for millions of Batman fans, giving this movie a well-earned spot on our list.

9. Spider Man: Homecoming (2017)

When it comes to Spider-Man movies, there are plenty of these–6 to be exact. However, this is the best Spider Man movie created so far for two main reasons: it offers a Spider Man version which is close to that of the 70s –a favorite for many fans- and it brings Spidey’s character closer to the one that Marvel fans are familiar with.

Spider Man’s character always had this delicate balance between humor and action, which is a theme that is finally brought back with this movie. Giving us a Peter Parker that is actually a high school student is also a great move in steering the Spider Man movies into the right direction.

8. The Avengers (2012)

If you’re a Marvel fan, The Avengers movie is simply a dream coming true. Basically, this is a massive brawl that involves some of the most popular Marvel superheroes and some worthy villains who want to destroy the world. What more could a Marvel fan possibly want from a movie?

The first Avengers movies had Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Hawkeye and the Black Widow. As the original Avengers included more superheroes, we definitely expect the introduction of more characters in the upcoming Avengers movies.

7. Iron Man (2008)

A billionaire playboy genius who flies around in super-advanced armor suit to fight bad guys all over the world, how better can it get? Tony Stark/Iron Man is definitely one of the most favorite Marvel characters and was brilliantly played by Robert Downey Jr. in this movie.

Memorable scenes in the movie include Tony Stark creating the Mark I suit while being held captive in a cave and his final fight with Obadiah Stane, his business partner and in a strong turn of events, his enemy. Among the three Iron Man movies that were made, this is definitely the crown jewel of the trilogy.

6. Logan (2017)

From all the X-Men and their amazing powers, Logan –AKA Wolverine- is definitely a favorite in the DC crowd. With his Adamantium skeleton, claws and a badass attitude, Wolverine managed to win the hearts of millions of fans. Since X-Men movies came out, Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine’s character.

The 17-year-long marathon has come to an end with Logan, which is supposedly the last time Hugh Jackman plays this character. In this movie, Logan exhausted as his powers are fading away, which is making him age. He protects a mutant girl whose powers are pretty similar to his in a storyline that shows the fan-loved character from a totally new perspective.

5. Ant-Man (2015)

Superheroes come in all size, Ant-Man proves it. Scott Lang is a master thief who is recruited by a scientist to use a suit that allows him to shrink to an ant’s size. In addition to shrinking, the suit gives Scott superhuman strength and the ability to control an army of ants, which makes him –you guess that right- the Ant-Man!

With such a unique storyline and the amazing performance of all actors involved in the movie, Ant-Man managed to secure a spot on our list.

4. X-Men: First Class (2011)

The best about X-Men movies is the fact that you have lots of superpowers in one place. Every mutant in the movie has some badass superpower, which is anything from reading minds to controlling the weather and shooting massive laser beams out of their eyes.

This movie goes back in time before Charles Xavier became Professor X and Erik Lehnsherr became magneto and the two were best friends. Charles and Max- along with other mutants- attempt to stop a nuclear war breaking out between the USA and the USSR during the infamous Cuban Missile Crisis.

What makes this movie stand out from the other X-Men movies is the compelling story and the fact that it sheds the light on the origins of the mutant-mutant feud.

3. Doctor Strange (2016)

This movie has some of the most impressive special effects that you’ll ever see in any superhero movie. In fact, this movie wouldn’t have been this great without those special effects as Dr. Stange’s sorcery powers really require it.

After using the proper use of his hands in a car accident, Dr. Stephen Strange –who couldn’t get results from traditional medicine-, embarks on a mission to find healing in a mystical enclave, where he meets the world’s most powerful sorcerer and uncovers his true fate. The Mind-blowing CGI and a compelling story helped this movie get a well-earned spot on our list.

2. Captain America: Civil War (2016)

After the collateral damage caused by the Avengers while saving the world –which is kind of justified- the government wants to create an agency that supervises superheroes, which causes a divide in the Avengers. Iron Man leading one side which is in favor of Oversight and Captain America leads the other side who are totally against it, which results in the kind of superhero feud that makes a great movie material.
