If you want an item delivered to your door in as little as 24 hours, everyone knows Amazon Prime is your best bet. Keep reading to learn what Prime Day is, when it will be held and what types of deals you can look forward to.
What is Prime Day?
According to Amazon.com, Prime Day is “an annual deal event exclusively for Prime members, delivering two days of special savings on tons of items.” It is Amazon’s biggest sale event (outside of Black Friday, that is).
Prime Day started on July 15, 2015. The day was created to celebrate the e-commerce giant’s 20th anniversary. It has been held every July from 2015 up through 2019. Amazon Prime Day has evolved over the years. It went from being a one-day event in prior years to a two-day long event in 2019. Additionally, the number of items being discounted has expanded. Prime members purchased more than 175 million items worldwide during Prime Day 2019. Items up for grabs on this day include gift cards, video game consoles, appliances, electronics and more.
When is Prime Day 2020?
Prime Day is normally held in July, but Amazon delayed the sale event this year due to the coronavirus.
“This year we’ll be holding Prime Day later than usual while ensuring the safety of our employees and supporting our customers and selling partners,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement, according to an article published by CNN.
So, when exactly will Prime Day be held this year? Well, unfortunately Amazon hasn’t announced the dates for the United States yet. According to IGN, it’s rumored that Prime Day will occur sometime in October. At least one media outlet has reported that Prime Day will be held on October 5, citing an email they saw that was addressed to third-party sellers. But, as of right now, that is purely speculation.
“If October is indeed the month and it begins on a Monday (which October 5 is), that leaves one of four choices for the start of Prime Day 2020: Monday, October 5, 2020, Monday, October 12, 2020, Monday, October 19, 2020, [or] Monday, October 26, 2020,” TechRadar.com wrote on its website.
Again, no one knows exactly when Prime Day will happen. What we do know at the moment, however, is that Amazon stated a while back that Prime Day would occur sometime in Q4.
What Kind of Deals Can You Expect?
Last year, Amazon Prime members saw great deals on items such as Toshiba’s 43″ 4K Smart HDTV, the Amazon Echo Dot, the Nintendo Switch, the Instant Pot DUO 60 6 Qt 9-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker, 23andMe DNA Health + Ancestry Test Kit and the iRobot Roomba 891 WiFi Robot Vacuum. Not to worry, there will be great deals this year as well.
According to The New York Times, you can expect to see deals on Amazon’s own line of products, including the Echo, Fire and Kindle. You can also expect to see deals on small kitchen appliances from crowd favorites like OXO, Instant Pot and select Apple products such as the Apple Watch Series 5, the 7th-generation iPad, the 3rd-generation iPad, the MacBook Air and the previous-generation iPad Pro.
Deals are divided into two types: “Prime Day Deals” that last the entire event, and “Lightning Deals” that last anywhere from a few hours to a few minutes, especially if it’s a hugely popular item. According to IGN, Amazon Alexa device owners are eligible for exclusive Prime Day 2020 Deals. All you have to do is ask your device “Alexa, what are your deals?”, and Alexa will show you unique deals that can’t be found anywhere else.
- Bookmark Amazon’s deal page to find the best Prime Day deals. Check the page early and often on the day of the sale to be among the first in line for items known to sell out quickly and for new deals that will likely be added throughout the event.
- According to Amazon.com, here is what you will see if a lightning deal is available on Prime Day 2020:
-The item featured in the deal.
-Any available variations of the item.
-The promotional discount amount and the final price (not including tax).
-A status bar showing the percentage of deals already claimed.
-A timer will be showing how long you have to add the item to your cart and claim the promotional discount.
-An ‘Add to Cart’ button will be on the page if there are promotional discounts available.
How You Can Prepare for Amazon Prime Day 2020
As stated earlier, Prime Day is exclusively for Prime members. With that being said, the first thing you need to do to prepare for the big day is to become a Prime member. Signing up is easy and new members are eligible for a free 30-day trial (students are eligible for a 6-month free trial).
For those of you who have already used up your free trial, you can get one month of Prime for just $12.99. Students who have already used up their 6-month free trial can get 50% off one year of Prime. For everyone else, membership costs $119/year.
Once your membership is approved and you’ve added your payment method(s) and other pertinent information, you will want to bookmark Amazon’s official Prime Day 2020 page. This is where you will find all the deals. Lastly, pay attention to the official announcement for when Prime Day will be. Normally, Prime Day takes place mid-July each year, and Amazon announces the Prime Day date at the end of June — two weeks prior to the event. So, if October is indeed the month, the announcement should be coming soon!
- To save even more money, consider signing up for a free Amazon Prime Rewards Card. You’ll get 5% cash back on all Amazon purchases, plus exclusive discounts of up to 15% off several categories (cameras, home theater electronics, home decor, video games, etc.) on Prime Day. Additionally, you’ll get a $50 Amazon Credit when you sign up. And, this card has no annual fee!
- Download the free Amazon app before Prime Day starts so you can get phone notifications when a deal is starting. Then, go to “Today’s Deals” in the app and click “Upcoming” to view all deals 24 hours before they go live. Lastly, tap “Watch this Deal” and wait to start shopping.
