London Museums Open Late: Regular Evenings vs. Special Events

Friday is a useful starting point for London museums open late: the British Museum, National Gallery, V&A South Kensington, and Tate Modern all list regular Friday evening hours. A special event called a Late is a separate planning question. It may have its own date, ticket, activities, and age restriction.
Choose by weekday and building first, then check the event calendar. This guide compares a small selection of major museums and art galleries, rather than ranking them or listing every after-hours attraction. Hours were checked October 22, 2026; all times below are local London time. Pick the collection you want to see, then use its official page to confirm your particular evening.
Start with your weekday, not a timeless closing-time list
For Friday, start with the four regular openings in the table. For Saturday, Tate Modern also lists a regular evening opening. If your available night is Monday through Thursday or Sunday, do not transfer a Friday schedule to it: look for a dated event or another venue whose visit page explicitly covers that day.
The distinction matters when you find an appealing event in a search result. A performance from a previous season can describe a real evening without telling you what is happening on your trip. Open the listing, read the date including the year, and check that tickets or entry details apply to the night you want.
Plan backward from what you want to see. Building closing time is the end of the visit, not an arrival target. Last admission, exhibition admission, and the time staff begin clearing galleries can differ. Leave room for entry checks and for finding your chosen rooms rather than building an evening around the final available minute.
Regular late openings with official links
| Building | Regular late day | Closing | Last entry or planning limit | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Museum, Great Russell Street | Friday | 8:30 p.m. | 8:15 p.m. last entry; listed late galleries until 8:20 p.m. | Friday late opening |
| National Gallery, Trafalgar Square | Friday | 9 p.m. | Check admission and room notices for your date | Plan your visit |
| V&A South Kensington, Cromwell Road | Friday | 10 p.m. | Some galleries close after 5:45 p.m.; check your intended rooms | South Kensington visit page |
| Tate Modern, Bankside | Friday and Saturday | 9 p.m. | Last entry 30 minutes before closing | Tate Modern visit page |
British Museum
This is a regular Friday collection visit, not simply an occasional party. The museum advertises free late entry and recommends booking a timed slot to guarantee admission. Its latest bookable slot is 7 p.m., which is different from the later last-entry deadline in the table. Special exhibitions carry a charge.
Use the Friday page’s open-gallery list to build your visit. It distinguishes available rooms from planned closures, so a particular collection may be a poor choice for the evening even when the building is open. The published exception includes no late opening on Good Friday, March 26, 2027.
National Gallery
Choose this Trafalgar Square building for a painting-focused Friday. General admission is free, with walk-up entry available; the gallery also offers free tickets for fast-track entry. Some exhibitions cost extra. The visit page identifies the Sainsbury Wing as the main public entrance.
Read the notices as well as the headline hours. For October 23, 2026, the gallery says its east wing closes at 6 p.m., while the rest of the gallery stays open until 9 p.m. That specific exception shows why a building-wide closing time cannot promise access to a particular painting.
V&A South Kensington
The Cromwell Road museum’s regular Friday opening runs until 10 p.m. Its visitor visual story says general entry is free and needs no ticket, while some exhibitions and events require paid tickets.
Some spaces close earlier, so select your rooms before committing to a late arrival. Keep the building name in your search: an opening time for another V&A site is not the South Kensington schedule. The separately named Friday Late program is explained below.
Tate Modern
The Bankside gallery gives you both Friday and Saturday evenings until 9 p.m., with last entry half an hour earlier. Its free collection visit makes it a useful Saturday alternative when a Friday-only opening does not fit your plans.
Use the Tate Modern page rather than a general search for Tate. You need the building, exhibition, and entry terms that match your destination. Choose a collection visit or a particular show before checking the relevant booking details; do not assume a free-admission headline includes every exhibition.
Friday Late is not the same as a regular late opening

Regular hours answer whether you can visit the building. An event listing answers what happens at a particular session. At the National Gallery, the Friday Lates calendar adds talks, workshops, and performances to the evening opening. Listings include both free activities and paid talks. Choose a session before assuming that admission to the collection includes the program you want.
The V&A Friday Late is advertised as free and drop-in on the last Friday of the month, except January, May, and December. That program is distinct from South Kensington’s regular Friday hours. A normal Friday evening and a themed Friday Late need not offer the same experience.
Science Museum Lates
Science Museum Lates are scheduled after-hours events on various dates, listed from 6:30 to 10 p.m. They are not a promise that the museum opens late every Friday. Check the specific session before making this your evening anchor.
Over-18s only is the stated age rule. General admission tickets are free, with a separate paid VIP category. Follow the event’s booking process and read what your ticket includes; a daytime museum visit and an evening event are different arrangements.
Natural History Museum evenings
For the Natural History Museum, start with its London event calendar and choose your date. Its ordinary London opening is listed as 10 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. Do not treat an after-hours event found elsewhere as a recurring weekly extension of those hours.
Check the exact event page for its building, entry arrangements, age conditions, and included spaces. If no evening event is listed for your date, choose a confirmed regular opening from the table instead of planning around a previous Late.
Plan one evening in one area
For a compact Friday plan, choose the National Gallery as your single museum stop. Select a few rooms or one exhibition, confirm their availability, then decide whether a listed Friday Lates session fits. Keep any food stop separate from the museum booking; a gallery closing time says nothing about restaurant availability.
If your priority is South Kensington, anchor the evening around the V&A or a confirmed Science Museum event. Choose between collection browsing and an organized program before buying anything. Avoid adding a second museum just because both appear in a late-opening roundup: separate admission checks can use up the time you meant to spend inside.
These are planning approaches, not timed itineraries. Set your own arrival target from the rooms or session you want, then check transport for the actual date. For broader daytime alternatives, see our rainy-day activities in London for adults.
Check tickets, bags, and gallery closures
- Match the date and building. Read the official visit notice and event calendar together, including holiday exceptions.
- Separate tickets. Identify general admission, exhibition admission, and event admission before choosing a booking slot.
- Check your rooms. Use the venue’s current floor plan or closure list rather than assuming the entire collection is open.
- Read bag rules before leaving. Check permitted sizes and storage arrangements on the venue’s visitor page, especially if arriving with luggage.
- Allow entry time. Free admission does not remove security checks or establish a queue-free arrival.
Keep the official booking confirmation and the building’s address together on your phone. Before traveling, reopen the venue notice for any date-specific change. If an exhibition is your main reason for visiting, confirm its own admission deadline rather than relying on the museum’s general closing time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which London museums open late on Friday?
The British Museum lists Friday closing at 8:30 p.m.; the National Gallery and Tate Modern close at 9 p.m.; V&A South Kensington closes at 10 p.m. These are regular building hours, with different entry deadlines and room restrictions. Use each venue’s official visit page for your date rather than assuming every gallery remains available until closing.
Are special late events always free?
No. A free collection visit does not establish the price of a talk, exhibition, or special evening. V&A Friday Late is advertised as free and drop-in; Science Museum Lates has free general admission alongside a paid VIP option and is for over-18s. Check the specific event’s date, ticket category, age rules, and included activities before booking.
