The HR-V has a versatile, cargo-friendly rear seat that flips up or folds down flat and low, which is based on the recently discontinued Fit subcompact.

Compared to the CR-V, the HR-V is a bit louder, and the ride is stiffer. But it is also considerably smaller and less expensive, so it is still a good option for some.

The car’s handling is responsive and secure. Its power comes from a 141-hp four-cylinder driving either the front or all four wheels. Some of Honda’s HR-V strengths include its excellent 29 mpg overall, flexible interior, and generous rear-seat and cargo room.

Available features include heated leather seats, a sunroof and keyless entry. According to Consumer Reports, the EX is the better choice due to the active safety features and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

4. Lexus GX

The GX 460 is very quiet and quick. Surprisingly, it is highly capable of off-road and adept at towing a 6,500-pound load. The 4.6-liter V8 engine and six-speed automatic make for a slick powertrain.

Handling is lumbering but ultimately secure. The ride is extremely comfortable, especially at low speeds! The interior is plush, well-finished and spacious. It has FCW and AEB with pedestrian detection. Finding a good seating position is easy, no matter the driver’s height.

According to Repair Pal, “GX460 owners have to bring their vehicles into a repair shop for unscheduled repairs an average of 0.8 times per year, compared to an average of 0.6 times for luxury midsize SUVs and 0.4 times for all vehicle models.”

It has impressive ownership costs with an average annual repair cost of $466. The severity of repairs is average, and the frequency of those issues is low, so major repairs are uncommon for the Encore. Its user-friendly infotainment system is convenient.
