Think you’re outsmarting potential burglars by hiding your valuables under the mattress or in the medicine cabinet? Think again! Here are ten of the most common places burglars look when casing your home.
10. Under the Mattress
If you’re stashing your cash and other valuables under your mattress, stop it! Those burglars are on to you. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book. In fact, most burglars — 75 percent to be exact — admit that the master bedroom is the first place they look for things to steal. “That’s where you have your clothes, your jewelry, your extra cash, your weapons, your prescriptions—anything of value,” Chris McGoey, CPP, CSP, CAM, president of McGoey Security Consulting, told Reader’s Digest.
9. Dresser Drawers
Another place thieves check out in the bedroom is the dresser drawers. While many people keep their jewelry box on top of the dresser, some people store their watches and jewelry in a shoebox or other unique box inside the dresser drawer. But, if you’re going to keep your valuables in the drawer, Robert Siciliano, CSP, security analyst with Hotspot Shield, suggests balling them up in a sock instead. And, not just any pair of socks. Make sure you pick a pair that stands out to you (e.g. bright pattern) but, at the same time, won’t look suspicious to a thief.
8. Bedroom Closet
A third common hiding spot in your bedroom is the closet — and thieves know to look there for valuables. In fact, they’ll rummage through just about anything in there to get their hands on your goodies — whether it’s your pants or jacket pockets, shoeboxes, or even a suitcase. “Suitcases are common things people use as a safe even though it’s not a safe,” and burglars will definitely open it if they find one in your closet, McGoey says, according to Reader’s Digest.
So, what do you do then? You store your valuables in boxes that are intentionally mislabeled. For example, you could store them in a box labeled “baby clothes,” McGoey added.
